Giovanni Simonetti was born in Oristano (Italy) on November 12, 1944. He graduated cum laude in Medicine in the year 1969/1970 at the University of Sassari. Between July 1970 and January 1971 he worked in the Institute of Pathology of that University with Prof. Giovanni Pende. In July 1972 he completed his residency in Radiology at the University of Cagliari discussing a thesis on “Angiography in renal traumas”. Giovanni Simonetti has always worked in an academic environment. His initial experience was at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” with Prof. Adamo Grilli and with Prof. Carlo Bompiani where he worked as: Assistant Lecturer (July 1971-August 1972); Assistant of the Full Professor (August 1972 – July 1976); Assistant Professor (July 1976 – November 1982). In December 1982 he was appointed Associate Professor of Radiology at the School of Medicine of the University of Sassari. In April 1983 he was appointed Director of the Institute of Radiology of that university and Director of the Residency Program in Diagnostic Radiology and Radiotherapy. In July 1984 he was appointed Extraordinary Professor at the University of Sassari. Since November 1990 he has been Professor of Radiology at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” where he is Director of:
the Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Molecular Imaging, Interventional Radiology and Radiation Therapy; the Residency program in Diagnostic Imaging and Interventional Radiology; the Residency program in Radiotherapy and the Graduate program in Techniques of Medical Radiological Imaging and Radiotherapy.
Prof. Simonetti is one of the six members of the Clinical Council in charge of the University Hospital “Tor Vergata”.
He is currently a member of a council of experts appointed by the National Health Institute (ISS) for the years 2003-2005.
His major research interests are in the field of cardiovascular radiology, interventional radiology and breast radiography and has published more than 500 scientific papers. Prof. Simonetti has participated in more than 1000 national and international congresses as speaker, chairman or member of the organizing committee.
Prof. Simonetti is member of the editorial board of numerous scientific journals and a member of many medical and surgical associations in Italy and abroad:

Prof. Simonetti has been also appointed as:
- President of the Study Section of Vascular and Interventional Radiology of the Italian Society of Medical Radiology. - President of the Study Section on Contrast Media of the SIRM - Member of the Study Section on Computerized Tomography - Secretary of the EUSOBI (European Society of Breast Imaging) - He is currently President of the Study Section on Breast Imaging of the SIRM

Prof. Simonetti was the first in Italy to perform an embolization of a digestive haemorrhage (1971) and a PTA on an iliac artery (1973).
